Higher difficulties will require you to employ different tactics, and I'd recommend not messing around with regular difficulty for even relatively experienced players. For a strategy game, there isn't all that much planning required when it comes to a bulk of the missions other than amassing a ball of whatever type of units you want, and throwing the swarm toward an enemy base. The aforementioned mission about Kerrigan storming a lab simply requires you to attack move forward as the game floods the halls with Zerg units you fling at the poor Terrans. Normal is just too easy, even during later missions which you would think would up the difficulty quotient. I will say that I'd recommend anyone who has played a Starcraft game before to play the campaign on Hard the first time around. There's even one Terran diversion where you control a superpowered Battlecruiser trying to rescue a prisoner from mercenaries.

The missions themselves are fun, and a mix of broad base-building exercises and more personal encounters with say, Kerrigan storming through a genetic research lab by herself. It can all feel like a bit of a Dragonball Z episode at times as Kerrigan charges up to her 'final form.' As much as I like Kerrigan and her band of misfits aboard her living ship, it can get a bit tiresome as you hear the words 'power' and 'essence' about six dozen times each throughout the course of the campaign, and 'get more power for the ultimate showdown' isn't exactly the most riveting of plot points. She travels to a world of feral Zerg where she's reborn as the Queen of Blades, more powerful than ever before. She does this by acquiring more and more power for herself gearing up for a final fight with Arcturus Mengsk.
